I check on a map where I need to be pointing and Dee where the sun is then just keep the sun in its position. Really handy for making straight lines to somewhere quick through forests over mountains ect

I use the same map as Alan, when navigating throuhg the north west. Rarely use anything for the rest of the map. Also works as a range finder

For me i use dayzcentral "pro" version. Literally the best thing next to the other maps you can search on your desktop but this is for your smart phone.
It has everything from a database for every weapon in the game and the ammo used for that weapon(If that weapon can be used for something, for e.g. a miningpick can be used for both mining stone and making a plot of land it well give information on it). As well as crafting guides etc. Answers pretty much all dayz question you have when you are starting out.
Only thing is its the pro version so its a couple bucks for it but WELL worth it.
